Playing The Local – for the first time! – this Saturday, March 14, 5 pm – 7 pm

Hi everyone,

It sorta feels like spring, right? Remember you still need to wear a coat. That gets me every time.

I’m writing to tell you about my second show of the year, at the Local. The Local – which is beside the Revue on Roncey – is one of my favourite little watering holes to just stop in at and listen to some tunes. Somehow I think this is my first actual gig there, though I’m sure I’ve been on stage before helping wrap cables and put away mics.

Anyway … playing this one as a duo with Paul Kolinski, which is always a pleasure. I’ve been setting monthly songwriting deadlines for myself this year, and it’s been working. So we’ll play some new tunes, some older ones and maybe some quite old ones; and a few covers … hopefully Paul will sing you a few songs too.

Stay well and warm out there,

Sarah

Sunday, January 5: Team Building 2020!

Happy New Year (and New Decade!!!) everyone!

Just a quick note to invite you to my first gig of 2020, and it’s a special one.

Just over a month ago, at the last Team Building (which Abigail Lapell and Kelly Sloan played incredible new songs at), host Luke Kuplowsky (LUKA) asked me to join in on Team Building 2020 aka the first Team Building of the year.

For the uninitiated, Team Building is a monthly (ish) early evening residency at Burdock (1184 Bloor Street West) that got its start at Holy Oak (RIP). It’s a community building initiative, where songwriters play a couple new songs/songs in progress, and it’s PWYC with proceeds going to charity (this month the charity is Sistering, which is just down the street from there).

Sunday, January 5
Burdock Brewery (1184 Bloor St. West, Toronto)
Doors: 5:30 pm
Show: 6 pm
Ends at 7:45 pm!
PWYC (proceeds go to Sistering)

Saturday, Sept 21: Holly Rees (Newcastle, UK), Lunar Bloom & Sarah Greene with Paul Kolinski

Saturday, Sept 21: Holly Rees (Newcastle, UK), Lunar Bloom & Sarah Greene with Paul Kolinski

Holly Rees (Newcastle, UK) plays Tranzac’s Southern Cross Lounge with Lunar Bloom and Sarah Greene. 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm, PWYC (recommended $10). Set times: Sarah Greene & Paul Kolinski – 6:30 pm; Holly Rees – 7:30 pm; Lunar Bloom – 8:30 pm.

Holly Rees

Holly is an indie-folk singer-songwriter who grew up in the moors of the Durham Dales in the North East of England. Her 2017 debut EP ‘Ilex’ launched her musical career with support from BBC 6 Music and a feature on Tom Robinson’s BBC Introducing Mixtape. 2018 saw this success continue with festival slots at Hit The North and Evolution Emerging, as well as supporting the likes of CoCo and the Butterfields, Joseph J Jones, X Factor’s Sam Lavery, and Hannah Trigwell. Described as Laura-Marling-meets-Courtney-Barnett, her sophomore EP ‘Slow Down’ was released in August 2018 and reached #6 in the iTunes charts with continued support from BBC Introducing as well as radio play further afield in Europe and the USA, and was followed by an impressive UK tour with Matt Dunbar. To celebrate the release of her latest single ‘Stick Around’ in December, Holly was joined by a full band at her biggest headline show to date. There’s no slowing down in 2019 either with the upcoming release of a full-band live EP, and the announcement that Holly is taking her heartfelt live shows to an international level with a solo Canadian tour this year.

Lunar Bloom

Lunar Bloom is an all female indie-folk trio from Toronto. Their music is full of ‘ear candy’, intricate three-part harmonies, dynamic range, and honest storytelling exploring themes of love, anxiety, hope and grief.

Sarah Greene

Sarah Greene is a songwriter, writer and music journalist from Toronto. Her songs are intimate, concise and idiosyncratically classic. Working in warm, soulful folk-rock ballads, Greene examines loneliness, vulnerability, and the tugging poles of freedom and attachment in her songs. She released two recordings as the front woman of mid-2000s Toronto alt-country band The Pickups before putting out her debut solo album, Toronto Blues, in 2011. She is currently working on writing and recording songs for a sophomore album, collaborating with a colourful cast of Toronto (and ex-Toronto) musicians.

This Wednesday with Brooklyn’s Charming Disaster

Hi folks, on Wednesday I’m playing my first show at the Burdock (one of my favourite places to go hear music – also they have kombucha on tap). It’s an early one – doors at 6 p.m. , show at 6:30, ends at 8, in time to go to another show (Collette Savard Trio at the Local?) if you want.

I’m opening for Charming Disaster, a gothic folk duo out of Brooklyn, NY. Think black ukuleles (even if the ukuleles are not literally black). You can hear them here: https://charmingdisaster.bandcamp.com

Here’s the details:

Doors at 6 p.m., Show at 6:30 p.m.
$10 in advance, $12 at the door

Tranzac Holiday Gift Fair weekend afternoons in December

I’ve been busy organizing Tranzac’s annual holiday craft fair. This is an excellent place to find a one of a kind handmade gift for someone you love … or to indulgently buy yourself soap and a new necklace (ahem) and maybe some cozy wool insoles for your boots … The fair’s been running for over two decades under different names. This time we figured we’d make it super clear by putting the location in the name. Please drop by and shop! It’s running 12 – 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays until December 17th. Admission is free. And while you’re there, buy a beer! Annex Cat Rescue (with catnip toys for your feline buddies) and Toronto Bee Rescue will be there, as well as dozens of vendors selling everything from scarves and hats and mitts to pottery and kids clothing; funky stationary, paintings, macrame plant holders, handmade books, candles (and lamps) made out of liquor bottles, ornamuffs and more.

Postcard art care of Sandra Taylor, who will be at the fair December 16.
